Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is taking the world by storm.
Some people are very in tune with the genre of music while others may not even know what it is. EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music, and it is a genre known to be played at clubs and raves.
It is characterized by a repetitive beat, with some other contributing factors. It is usually played and produced by people who are in the DJ-ing profession. It has become particularly popular, especially in this generation.
EDM artists are getting a lot of attention on social media and by collaborating with pop and rap artists. An example of this would be Fred Again's collab with the rapper Lil Yachty called "Stayinit" or Skrillex's song with Missy Elliot called "Ratata."
Despite EDM's recognition from numerous generations and its widespread influence, it has become increasingly popular amongst Generation Z. As a generation that is more in tune technologically, EDM resonates with our way of life. The genre is produced by technology, and it is how sounds and beats are created.
EDM artists/lovers can create and share music from the comfort of their own homes with the proper software and technology. People with a genuine love for this genre don't have to sit back and just enjoy it they can make their own music too, and this alone shows how influential this genre can be.
It has also become popular from the festivals that have evolved into a cultural phenomenon offering captivating experiences that combine the use of art, technology, and of course music. The culture can be seen as way more than just the music, there are so many more components.
EDM festival goers come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. This genre offers a sense of community and connection amongst the fans and genre lovers who attend the shows. According to researchers, the main rave philosophy is one of good vibes and acceptance, outlined as PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect), and unlike other musical subcultures, violence is not common, and ravers are generally nice to each other.
EDM itself is very diverse and has a vast array of sub-genres including deep house, dubstep, techno, trance, and more. You may lean towards a different sub-genre of EDM that resonates with your mood or taste in music more, so there is a lot of room for exploring what you may like. It doesn't just pertain to one group of people. The sub-genres are mainly characterized by their beats per minute (bpm).
A DJ's music/songs produced, collaborations, skills, creativity, or authenticity can really set them apart from one another. The way a DJ goes about producing music or the way he/she goes about telling their story or a story could be a crucial factor in determining popularity or success.
Fred Gibson otherwise known as Fred Again is an example of understanding true authenticity and creativity in EDM or DJ-ing. Much of Fred's music involves clips of audio that he pulls from videos on his phone. Fred Again's music is so popular and loved because it is often real and relatable.
There are so many aspects that attract people to the EDM genre and there is something for everyone to love and enjoy.
