September 13, 2023 marked the end of the seven-day New York Fashion Week. The inspiration behind the bold looks that dominated the exciting biannual show was mythology and fantasy which left many in awe. Some of the looks featured were influenced by the trending “mermaid-core” and “whimsical fairy” aesthetics. Colors such as green, purple, white, and gold dominated the runway and many designs were very funky and eclectic.
The star of the show this year was Ralph Lauren, whose comeback was highly anticipated within the industry. His comeback was deemed very successful with his timeless pieces that emphasized sustainability. Lauren was very diverse in his design and model choices and showed appreciation for cultures from all over the world. The brand continues to live up to its reputation as forever being chic and iconic.
In the wake of NYFW/23, Stephany Portillo Hidalgo, President of SFC Fashion Club, gave us her take on the event and her predictions for upcoming fashion trends among SFC students. In her interview, Hidalgo expressed her excitement to see more bold and expressive looks in the upcoming fashion season. “Bold can mean so many things to different people,” Hidalgo explained, adding: “I’ve noticed that the students of SFC are becoming more confident and bold in their fashion sense and I’m living for it!”
According to Hidalgo, NYFW/23 was chaotic in a good sense. “It was such a mixture of colors, styles, and textures that it was a visual representation of chaos.” she concluded. Hidalgo further explained that the chaotic atmosphere was liberating and it allowed for creativity and self-expression. She also said it was a sign of changing times, with fashion becoming more diverse and inclusive, and is very excited to see what is in store for the upcoming seasons.
