Coping Mechanisms For Academic Burnout at SFC

The fast-paced academic environment of St. Francis College has resulted in a significant amount of academic burnout for students juggling coursework, exams, and extracurricular activities.

Academic burnout can manifest itself in different ways, such as lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, and feeling overwhelmed. It is important to recognize the symptoms of academic burnout and take steps to address them, such as taking breaks, setting realistic goals, and talking to a mental health professional.

After interviewing fifty students at SFC, I have compiled a list of some strategies used by students to help manage and overcome academic burnout.

A Criminal Justice major, Cassidy Baxter, emphasized the importance of taking breaks. She added, “I usually allow myself some time away from my studies, taking breaks during study sessions and longer breaks between study days or weeks.” Another important coping mechanism is to set realistic goals. It is crucial that students break down their tasks into smaller, more manageable goals. This can make your workload seem less overwhelming and help you stay focused.

Prioritizing self-care is a key component of the third strategy. Students should make sure to get adequate rest, nourish themselves, and engage in physical activity in order to maintain good mental health. To assist students in managing their workload and maintaining good mental health, the College has implemented a range of support services, including counseling and tutoring, as well as support groups. Additionally, SFC has made changes to its study hours to facilitate better management of student time.

Celebrate your successes, big or small. Recognizing and celebrating your accomplishments can increase your self-esteem and boost your motivation. If you can, try to switch up your study setting. A new environment can give you a new perspective and help you break the monotony.

The Office of Health and Wellness also shared some mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help students ease their minds and destress. These include practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, or meditation to help manage stress and stay focused. It was also advised that apps or guided sessions can be helpful. It is very important for students to reconnect with their initial motivations for pursuing their academic goals. Understanding your purpose can renew your sense of commitment.

It is important to remember that academic achievement is a continuous process, and it is essential to prioritize one's health in order to maintain optimal performance. It is acceptable to seek assistance and make changes to one's academic and personal life in order to achieve a healthy equilibrium.
