Changing Generations, One Degree at a Time

 By: Sanai Smith

To some people, graduating college may seem like the greatest achievement. It brings immense pride and joy to anyone who accomplishes it, however, being the first in one’s family to graduate comes with pressure and challenges. The overall weight of expectations can be super overwhelming. Not only are you pursuing your own dreams and aspirations, but the hopes and dreams of your entire family are on your back as well.

The path to becoming the first college graduate in a family is never easy, especially when you commit to it without any gap years or breaks. This level of commitment can often arise from a desire to set an example for future generations. Being that I have an older sister, who started yet didn’t finish, and a younger sister who is one yet follows things I do, it inspired me more to graduate on time.

Financial constrictions can be another hurdle to try and overcome. My family and I wouldn’t be considered the richest family in the bunch, but we make it work. The burden of tuition fees, textbook fees, food, transportation, and living expenses, can be a drag. Some first-generation students without breaks must learn to navigate the very complex world of scholarships, grants, loans, and financial aid on their own. This new financial independence, although it’s challenging, instills a sense of resourcefulness that can help one well in life beyond college.

Despite these challenges, the journey toward being the first in my family to graduate college without any gap years is an inspiring story to tell my children and my little sister when her own time comes. It can demonstrate how the power of education is a tool for social mobility and personal growth. Nothing feels better than that feeling of pride and joy when the diploma is in your hand knowing that this is the start of a path created for future generations.
