Hard-Hitting Lessons Learned From Softball

By: Janae Lacy

Growing up, I was always a shy and reserved person. I struggled to make friends and often found myself sitting on the sidelines, watching others have fun and enjoy themselves. But everything changed when I discovered softball.

I had always been interested in sports but had never really found one that I felt passionate about. That all changed when I started playing softball in middle school. From the first time I stepped onto the field, I knew that this was something special. The rush of adrenaline as I ran to catch a fly ball, the thrill of hitting the ball out of the park, and the sense of camaraderie and teamwork with my teammates all made me feel alive in a way that I had never experienced before.

But beyond the physical aspects of the game, softball also helped me to break out of my shell and become more confident in myself. For the first time in my life, I was part of a team, and I had to learn to communicate with others, both on and off the field. I had to learn to speak up, share my ideas, and take charge when necessary. These were skills that I had never really developed before, but they were essential for succeeding in softball and in life.

As I continued to play softball throughout middle school and high school, I found that my confidence grew stronger with each passing day. I no longer felt like a wallflower, but instead, I was able to interact with others in a meaningful way. I made friends with my teammates, and we bonded over our shared love of the game. I even became a captain of my high school softball team, which was a huge accomplishment for me.

Apart from the personal growth that I experienced, softball also taught me some important life lessons that I carry with me to this day. One of the biggest lessons was the importance of perseverance. Softball is a game of failures, and I learned that it's not about how many times you fall down, but about how many times you get back up. I had to learn to bounce back from setbacks, such as striking out or making an error, and to keep pushing forward, no matter how difficult things may seem.

Overall, I'm grateful for the impact that softball has had on my life. It helped me to break out of my shell, become more confident, and learn some important life lessons along the way. Today, I still play softball recreationally, and I always look back on those years with fondness and gratitude for the person that the game helped me become.
