Navigating the College Experience: Overcoming Anxiety & Uncertainty

By: Feeby Ebeid

The college experience is supposed to be all about exploration. It is where most young people go, not only to excel academically but also to grow and mature into themselves. It is supposed to give young people the opportunity to discover what makes them feel fulfilled. However, studies have shown that approximately 60 to 70 percent of college students report feeling lost and lonely often or very often, according to the National College Health Assessment (NCHA).

These feelings are an amalgamation of several factors. Firstly, this is a significant transition period, and navigating it can be quite hard, especially when doing it far from home and without one’s support systems. And with this period, many experience their first real taste of adulthood with all these new responsibilities and expectations.

However, one main factor that seems to overwhelm many students is having to figure out what major and career path to take during and after college for an indefinite amount of time. SFC students were interviewed about this, and they have reported feeling pressured and like they are running out of time.

“I feel this lingering anxiety all the time. I constantly think about how behind I am compared to many of my friends and classmates. They seemingly have it all figured out and I don’t know what I’m doing,” states Mariam, a sophomore.

Most of the time, these feelings are accompanied by fear: fear of the unknown, of failure, fear of making decisions because “what if I make the wrong decision and choose the wrong path?” Even though these feelings are very common among college students, most feel alone in this.

“I want to run away. I’m just very scared, you know. I feel like I wasted a lot of time,” Danelle, a junior, states.

The college experience is often romanticized, yet for many students, it can be overwhelming due to feelings of confusion, loneliness, and anxiety. However, it's crucial to remember that these feelings are not uncommon and that seeking support and validation is perfectly okay. Remember, you are not alone in this, and with patience and resilience, you will find your path forward.
